The extremogram: A correlogram for extreme events

چکیده

We consider a strictly stationary sequence of random vectors whose finite-dimensional distributions are jointly regularly varying with some positive index. This class of processes includes, among others, ARMA processes with regularly varying noise, GARCH processes with normally or Student-distributed noise and stochastic volatility models with regularly varying multiplicative noise. We define an analog of the autocorrelation function, the extremogram, which depends only on the extreme values in the sequence. We also propose a natural estimator for the extremogram and study its asymptotic properties under α-mixing. We show asymptotic normality, calculate the extremogram for various examples and consider spectral analysis related to the extremogram.

A Fourier analysis of extreme events

The extremogram is an asymptotic correlogram for extreme events constructed from a regularly varying stationary sequence. In this paper, we define a frequency domain analog of the correlogram: a periodogram generated from a suitable sequence of indicator functions of rare events. We derive basic properties of the periodogram such as the asymptotic independence at the Fourier frequencies and use...

Active Distribution Networks Restoration after Extreme Events

After extreme events such as floods, thunderstorms, blizzards and hurricanes there will be devastating effects in the distribution networks which may cause a partial or complete blackout. Then, the major concern for the system operators is to restore the maximum critical loads as soon as possible by available generation units.  In order to solve this problem, this paper provides a restoration s...

Modelling Time Series Extremes

• The need to model rare events of univariate time series has led to many recent advances in theory and methods. In this paper, we review telegraphically the literature on extremes of dependent time series and list some remaining challenges. Key-Words: • Bayesian statistics; Box–Cox transformation; clustering; dependence; extremal index; extremogram; generalized extreme-value distribution; gene...

Towards Estimating Extremal Serial Dependence via the Bootstrapped Extremogram

Davis and Mikosch [3] introduced the extremogram as a flexible quantitative tool for measuring various types of extremal dependence in a stationary time series. There we showed some standard statistical properties of the sample extremogram. A major difficulty was the construction of credible confidence bands for the extremogram. In this paper, we employ the stationary bootstrap to overcome this...
